Earlier this month I found my first Standing Liberty Quarter which was a 1928.

So today at lunchtime I went back to the same park in the same general area and got a good signal that kept jumping back and forth from 50 cent to dollar on my DFX. I dig down around six inches and hit something. Turned out being a 1917 SLQ which now has a nice big gash on the back. I was so mad at myself that I was so off on the pinpointing. Scan the hole again and there is still a good signal. I recovered a second 1917 SLQ...this one without the ugly gash. I guess the second coin threw off my pinpointing.

They look to be two different types but will not know for sure until I clean them up a bit. These two came up with a grayish coating which I notice when I recover silver coins within a few feet of concrete sidewalks. It was hard to go back to the office but I had a interview coming in so I had to return.

Any suggestions on how to clean the grayish coating off? I will try to post a picture when I get home tonight.

Pictures added...I still can't believe I hit one with my digger.

Other then a warm water rinse I did not clean and from all the comments I will not. I hope you enjoyed them. I will try to make it back to this section of the park today if my work day allows for it.

Re: My fantasy of twins came true today....

congrats on finding two SLQ's.
hope that they are two different varieties, and also that you don't clean the grayish coating off.
if you must, a quick bath in lemon juice works pretty well.

Re: My fantasy of twins came true today....

Rubbing with baking soda works well too, but I wouldn't touch them until you make sure they are not valuable- you may regret cleaning them

The 1917 SLQ are valueable coins... 22-30.00 for G-4 (worst possible grade) DO NOT CLEAN!!!!!!!! btw that was a real nice find!

The gouge >:( >:( >:( >:(

I know...I think since the coins were not stacked but a few inches apart it threw off my pinpointing and I was in a park trying to keep the hole as small as possible. No excuses though it should not have happen...

did you check for a mint mark? they are located between the star an left foot of the obverse side

I did not check for mint marks but I will tonight...thanks. Believe or not I'm not a big coin guy unless it is really old (by US standards 200+ years) but with my time restrains I do mostly coinshooting since I can do that at lunch time. No good relic sites close to work.

reason I asked is cause it looks like there maybe a D on the first coin or the coin on left side of obverse photo, but I can't see it that well to be 100% sure

nice, standing libertys are some of the neatest coins. Anyone would be happy with such a find!

One of the easiest points of identification that I can see is on the reverse. The eagle's beak on the left coin is above the R in DOLLAR and on the right coin it points directly at the R.

I would be very cautious about cleaning them, just in case.

WTG, great find(s)
