My wife and I were asked to clean out an old family friends cabin recently as the cabin and property has sold and the contents needed to be removed. Due to some serious time constraints, we reluctantly agreed to take on the task. We were allowed to do whatever we wished with the contents as sort of an incentive.

During the clean up I could not help to wonder if this man had some sort of stash. Being that he was a teenager during the Great Depression, it certainly seemed within reason. As we neared the end of the clean up, I was just cleaning up some bits and pieces from the loft area behind his bunk. After grabbing a small box of old vacuum attachments, I noticed a small old wooden box sitting there and at first made no mind of it since everything you touched in the place was old and neat. Continuing to clean up misc bits from the floor, I reached and grabbed the box figuring it was empty. It was HEAVY! Ok I thought, this must be some more misc hardware as he had a huge collection of very old cigar boxes all neatly organized and labeled with misc hardware items. So I set the box back down and began to slide the lid open....Whoa! As I began opening the box I saw the coins and immediately got chills and shut the box. Took a deep breath and walked it down to my wife to show her.

I have not gone thru the contents until right now. In fact, I decided to begin writing this post before going thru it so that we could kind of all do it together:wink:

So I am going to pause writing this and get the box. I will take pictures as I go here...

Wow...OK so it is going to take me some time to go thru all of this. I think what I will do is lay everything out and make an inventory of everything. I will also buy some coin sleeves to put them in. Hopefully after I get everything inventoried, you guys (the experts) can give me a clue as to whether any of them are "key" dates because I have no clue.

Hope you enjoyed this, I need to get busy!
Take care and happy hunting!

oh be still my heart

ok i recovered, cant wait to see them laid out LOL
made your day, nice he said, do with the stuff, what you want to

OK guys, I got everything laid out and took notes. Instead of typing it all out I thought pictures of the notes would be easier (at least on me). If you have a question about something I wrote, please let me know!
I still can't believe I found this.
Take care.

that's pretty cool

208 mercs, most are lucky to have 1-10
id be tempted to go back, look under a floor board or 2

So I will be at the old cabin again this coming weekend. I will try to get some pictures of the cabin and where I found the treasure. It might help put this all in perspective. The cabin is the oldest building in that area.

Big lucky. This box with coins - wait only you

That is Absolutely Amazing! I would metal detect the outside for hidden stashes too. Holy Moly what a score.

Cool story. Awesome for you and your wife! I agree with kingskid! I'd detect the grounds! Best of luck.

Hey thanks! I agree with you guys about metal detecting the outside and will eventually do that I hope. As far as looking under boards in the cabin.....I did find one panel in the wall at a very odd spot. It was a hole cut on the back side of the kitchen wall with about a 16" square panel nailed to it. Turns out it was a wiring repair or junction. This coming up weekend is going to be my last time in there, I would hate to think I left even one stone (or board) unturned.

Also, as far as the coins..... I am not sure about which dates are "key" when it comes to coins but I can tell you that the condition is somewhat poor on many of them.

So many firsts came from this.

Wow, that's a good find.

Holy crap...call 911, I'm not breathing!

i say BANNER !! :notworthy:

That is an awesome story! Thanks for taking us along on the reveal. I bet detecting the property will be just as fun!

Incredible!! I am so jealous... Lucky you!

How fun was that! I wonder if those types of plastic baggies will give you an idea of when it was stashed in the old box? I would be floored to find that
