I guess I got happy to quick ???, I just found the 71's are not silver but silver clad.. :'(

Does the 71's have any value or do I need to turn them in?

Hey Rick,
The 1971 halves list at about $2.00 each in MS 63 condition.
I don't know if anyone is buying them.
But if they all look uncirculated i would hold on to them for a while.
They could be worth something later.

Great Find,
Keep up the Search,

Mike in SC

Thanks, for the input. Well they are circulated coins with the wear and tear of such.. :-\
Thanks again

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but 1971's aren't even silver clad, they're copper nickel. 1965 to 1970 are silver clad, 40% silver. 1964 and before are 90% silver. Although there were a few pieces dated 1971-D and 1977-D that were struck in silver clad by error.

And the 1970-D silver clads aren't seen much in rolls, they were issued in mint sets only. 1970-S were proof only.

Pick up a copy of the Red Book by R.S. Yeoman at the coin shop- great source of info on all American coins, what to look for, what not to look for. :)

Even though the 1971's are clad -- to answer your question, 40% silver halves (1965-1970) are worth $1.88 as of last Friday's silver quote of $12.72 per ounce of silver. That's with a silver content of 0.1479 ounces of pure silver.
The 1964 Kennedys and Franklins, Walkers, etc. are worth $4.60 (by my calculation) in silver content, with a silver content of 0.36169 ounces of pure silver. The silver content figures are from the 2006 Red Book Guide of United States Coins by R. S. Yeoman.
HH,
Bob

PS -- If you don't have a copy of the Red Book, buy one or check one out of the library. It's a treasure trove of coin collector information.
