Okay, after looking at some of the awesome stuff posted today, this is pretty lame. but I'm a newb and this was only my second day out hunting because our ground here in PA just thawed out recently. So, took my new Xmas present (Ace 250) out for a spin. And here's today's total: One old, really heavy screw-on gas cap of some sort; a lead-and-rubber sinker; a lead casting weight; an old cut nail; a brass shell casing; my first ever coin, a 2000 Rosie dime; and some weird kind of slag or a piece of ore. Plus 4 pull tabs, 3 aluminum bottle caps, 2 pop tops from some kinda cans, and the plug end of a small fluorescent bulb (not shown).

No idea what the slag thing is, but it set my Ace to beeping something nuts. I'm still getting used to the Ace's signals. Had it set for coins only when I found all of this stuff. The slag sent the indicator flying like it was having a seizure between a dime and a quarter, but the signal was a definite hard chirp. It looks like it contains some kind of fossil shapes, but I'm no expert and can't be sure.

Anyway, I'm including the whole spread plus some detail shots. If anyone has any ideas about what the mystery lump is (I show it from 3 different angles, and you can see where my digger hit it), I'd sure appreciate hearing about it.

Whats lame?? You found a way to have fun?? You found a way to exercise and make money?? You found a coin, now what can be better than that?? Congrats on your first of MANY coins to come!!

Congrats,

I went hunting for the first time today as well, and pulled up 4 quarters and 2 dimes, all modern clad but hey.. its still worth money! LOL

Nice job!

Good first day, Wildheart. I have an Ace250. I've learned you find more good stuff if you running the settings at jewelry or relic. You will find more junk, but better stuff also. Remember, if you aren't finding nickles, you won't be finding any gold.

Good post.

Congratulations on your finds, you'll find that just because something comes up on a quarter, that doesn't mean it'll be a quarter, might be a can. The wife has a little yella fella too, and she finds some good stuff, just remeber to dig EVERYTHING that you come across, that way you won't miss out on that gold ring!

Nothing lame about your first outing. I started MDing last June and frankly I didn't do near as well as you. The more you swing the coil, the more you'll learn, the more you'll find. Great finds.

congrats I think you did good for your first time out and think what you can do after mastering that ACE 250 and good luck on future hunts.

Congrats of your first coin! You'll find lots more and silver ones too.

I started detecting on July 12 last summer, after assembling my machine I took it out to the back yard
and my very first target, first hole I dug, scored a 1965 rosie.

Good luck,
HH.

Congratulations! I think you did great for the first time out. That slag thingy looks weird, I wish I could tell you what it is but I can't. Just keep swinging your detector - great finds are coming.
Happy Hunting!
John

Looks good, first time and bring something home. It will just keep getting better!

Hi, from a fellow TreasureHunter (THer) that does his hunting in S. KOrea. Good job for a first day. I can't give any advice on the detector that you have....never owned one. But, just keep swinging it, and try to remember - even a log book - so that you know what you are getting at different settings. And, listen to the guys who have the Ace.....they will save you time and patience.
As I recall, 35 + years ago, you found as much or more than me my first time out. And it was in my front yard, too. We all usually start there....and nothing wrong with that.
See if there is a club in your area. You'll get a heap of learnin from going to the meeting and asking questions.
Finally, that piece of slag.....I swear, those things must mutate........I find some here in S. Korea that look almost identical, and make my machine go crazy, too. :icon_scratch: Don't know what they are, why they are in the ground, but do know that I found them in almost every place that I have hunted. Get used to
them......(I think they follow us around. ::)

Good hunting....keep posting.

Congrats on your first digs. The good stuff is just around the corner.

Congrats on your finds....and many more first yet to come

Happy Hunting,

lame? where is the lame stuff?

I like the knob thing, thats pretty cool of a find

congrats on your first of many coins to come

Congrats and happy hunts

Wow, Y'all - Thanks!

It's nice to know I'm not actually...lame. ;)

I appreciate all the support and encouragement. And now, since you were all so nice, I feel like going out again. 5PM seems to be my "hunting happy hour," so I'm gonna go see what our nearby churchyard has to offer. I have a standing invitation to hunt there, and since it's circa late 1700s, I think I might actually find somethin' good!

You go girl! And relax! We *ALL* start off as newbies.. I still consider myself something of a newby even though I've got roughly two years of experience under my coil now. I have two bits of advice for you though.. one.. HAVE FUN!!!! I think you have that idea already.. secondly.. DIG EVERYTHING! You'll see that axiom parroted in nearly every post you read on here, the old hands or at least the ones with more experience than us newbies keep repeating it.. and it's worth repeating.. DIG EVERYTHING!
Oh sure.. you'll dig a LOT of pull tabs, nails, bottle caps and other junk, but you'll also find goodies, coins, jewelry, and who knows what else. Good luck at that churchyard. You might ask someone in the know (who knows the history of that church and its grounds) where the "privy" was located back before they had indoor plumbing. You'd be surprised at how many coins fell by the wayside from people going to and from the "outhouse".. That and pay close attention to edges of sidewalks, parking lots, and around BIG or old trees. You'll see people gather in groups about or under a tree to chat or gossip before or after the sermon. Gatherings of people mean dropping of coins. And if that church has been around that long.. I'm sure there have been LOTS AND LOTS of people under and around the trees, the steps going into the church, the sidewalks going to and from the parking lot.. or the outhouse.. and around the parking lot(s). Did they ever have tent revivals on the grounds? Picnics? Festivals? <smile> All these questions could lead you to more and more finds, and more and more fun! Congratulations on your first coin.. may you find many many more and have as much fun as the rest of us enjoy in this hobby!

Happy Hunting~
