Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
I detected an inactive farm field for a couple hours today, as the weather was spectacular for this time of year. I am not sure how old the property is, but I know there was a home there in the 1870s before the current house was built. My first find about a half hour in was the colonial buckle (at least I hope it's colonial), which was intact when I dug it, but was in two pieces when I took it out of my pouch. I think it is a small shoe buckle (1 1/2 inches), though I suppose it could be a knee buckle. What do you think? Any suggestions for cleaning it safely? Short while later I found the flat button, which says "Double Gilt Tops;" I am guessing 1850s. Also found a small, two-hole metal button, which is a first for me. I am guessing 1870s or later, but would appreciate any opinions. Things slowed down for a while until I hit the two Indian Head pennies on the opposite end of the field, 1893 and 1881. Out of these finds, I think I like the buckle best, as it is an indication the property is older than I thought. Can't wait to get back out there. Thanks for looking and for any comments/advice. Happy hunting.

Looks like a mid to late 18th century knee buckle. Ill bet there’s more colonial at that site

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Looks like a large Knee Buckle to me.

Nice coin and relic finds.

Very nice finds there!!! I would say you are onto a great site! You have to wonder how the farmer lost his pants out in the field? Hey can I ask you what number the knee buckle rang up as? I found myself a similar thing that I am really excited about and will post in the next day or two.

Thanks for the comments. It showed in the low 20s on the Equinox, if I remember correctly. The tone and number were a bit jumpy on account of its shape, so I wasn't expecting much. I was thrilled with the buckle, and wish it remained intact. I am hoping for some cleaning tips here, as I would like to bring out the detail . Good luck with your piece and your searching-the weather in Mass has been great this winter for our hobby.

Very nice finds, congrats! :occasion14:

By the size it looks like a knee buckle.

Great finds. Couldn't ask for a better day to get out to do some detecting. Well done.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for Garrett numbers (haha) but yeah mine rang low like a shotgun shell. So glad I dug it. Check Aureus's latest post I asked him about cleaning buckles. Seems like solid advice. Congrats again I still have not found a knee buckle!

Nice knee buckle great condition and sweet coinage looks like a fun site to RIP into keep it up. Tommy
