I detected an inactive farm field for a couple hours today, as the weather was spectacular for this time of year. I am not sure how old the property is, but I know there was a home there in the 1870s before the current house was built. My first find about a half hour in was the colonial buckle (at least I hope it's colonial), which was intact when I dug it, but was in two pieces when I took it out of my pouch. I think it is a small shoe buckle (1 1/2 inches), though I suppose it could be a knee buckle. What do you think? Any suggestions for cleaning it safely? Short while later I found the flat button, which says "Double Gilt Tops;" I am guessing 1850s. Also found a small, two-hole metal button, which is a first for me. I am guessing 1870s or later, but would appreciate any opinions. Things slowed down for a while until I hit the two Indian Head pennies on the opposite end of the field, 1893 and 1881. Out of these finds, I think I like the buckle best, as it is an indication the property is older than I thought. Can't wait to get back out there. Thanks for looking and for any comments/advice. Happy hunting.
