I was typing fast so please excuse misspells. First off my name is Evan and I been in the Army for about 9 years and below is my first day as a CRH.

I was looking into investing in Silver and happened to stroll across this forum which got me out there hunting some coins! Last Saturday I went out and did some cherry picking because most of the banks were closed. Got me about $300 dollars of Halves with some other random rolls of nics, qtrs, dimes, pennies. Found my first 1964 Kennedy in the first batch along with 2 wheat pennies in the $10 dollars I hunted.

Then today I went to my regular bank (Armed Forces) and did a dump. I went out on the hunt again and found a great supply bank. Walked in and asked if they had halves and the teller said that she had 3 boxes. I was worried for a moment that it was somebodies dump bank and I would be wasting my time. I decided to pull the trigger and go for it. She told me that I had to have an account with them to get boxes but it was a $10 deposit with no fees attached. I said OK and started talking to her. She asked if I was a coin collector and what I was looking for. I told her that I was and I was looking for silver halves and key dates. She said that they have 3 other guys with accounts there that use the bank as their half dollar supply bank and I asked her if they ever bring the coins back and she said that they take them but never bring them back. I was certainly relieved to hear that and was told that I she orders boxes from the Fed for her collectors and always tries to keep a good stock and if they are out she orders more automatically. She also said that they keep an eye out for Eisenhower's or other good coins and call their collectors and the first one to answer and shows up can get them.

Anyhow, I got my account set up and grabbed my first full $500 dollar box and went on my way. Came home and found 2 more 1964s in the box, however the last two times I noticed something. In the first box and other rolls I've picked I noticed that some previous CRHs mark some of the coins to identify if they have already looked through them or not. This is two banks I seen different coin marks and it has me wondering. Do most of you see this as well or is this a rarity? I am happy about my 3 1964s in just two days of hunting but am a nervous about finding so many marked batches of coins. Also, besides the Franklin's, Walking Liberties, and Proofs what other key dates or Kennedy's should I keep an eye out on? Anyhow, today was fun and will post further finds later, happy hunting!

Hey man, I just recently start CRH as well. I spent a little over a year in the Marines before being medically discharged. I'll tell ya what, I have the worst luck, but CRH is addicting as hell when you start finding shiny little pieces of silver in everyday currency. Haha. I appriciate your service. God bless, and good luck.

Oohrah,
Cody.

Marked coins are fairly common. Welcome to tnet.
Here is the jist on searching boxes. The same coins are searched again and again with silver being added from outside source (collections being dumped, etc.) So basically, almost all coins are searched over and over again. I notice lots of hunters on here open boxes and think it is a waste of time if they see marked coins. Don't believe it!
On another note, banks don't order from "the fed". It still amazes me that bank tellers don't know this.

Yeah, seeing marked coins sucks but I never stop because you never know what someone will overlook. I have also found an 03, 04, and a 05 kennedy that I kept because I heard they are rare. Also, where do those boxes come from? Is it a regional center that gathers all the coins from the banks rerolls and redistributes? How exactly does that system work?

The courier companies deliver and pick up coin. You've seen their trucks before (loomis, brinks, etc). They take them back to their local home base and reroll them. All coin doesn't come from a single warehouse.

welcome to the hobby, but rule number 1 of CRHing is "never tell others about it". Granted that teller already knew about it but if she hadn't you just made yourself more competition. Good luck on your future hunting!

O yeah, actually I went to one bank and got $300 dollars in halfs on my first day and the teller asked me what I planned on doing with all of them, I just told her I was a coin collector looking for rare dates :icon_pirat:

1970D is hard to come by. 1984 and anything after 2002 were not issued for circulation (NIFC). These were intended for sets and are kinda rare. Welcome.

How do guys mark coins? In my first of 2 rolls of Ikes I got last week, one actually had a spot on it where someone drilled it a little. Probably not a mark for if they have looked thru it, but it got me thinking.

Well the ones I was looking at yesterday had a green X on the face of them.

Shooting yourself in the foot awful early in the game. Come up wih some kinda BS story ::)

Marked coins are common and don't mean anything. I've found them in rolls with silver halves!
I think they are a waste of the marker's time.

As far as stories to tell tellers
1) These coins are for my son's school project
2) My kids and I are coin collectors, we like old coins
3) My friends and I play poker and we use the halves for chips

when dumping

1) I own vending machines
2) I inheirated a hoard of coins that I am searching thru
3) I lost my jobs and I am cashing in my coin collection

or when they ask questions pretend that you are back in school. Look them in the eyes and answer," I dont know"

Welcome...keep reading the posts, searching the rolls, and just have fun! You may even find some coins that will make you a little money one day. That's my philosophy! :hello2:
