My FIRST EVER outing on the beach - What should I take?

Hi all

Have just purchased a Fisher CZ7a and going for my first outing tomorrow down to our local beach!

Taking my children with me (I feel like 'planting' a few coins so not to disappoint them!)

Never been metal detecting before and just seeking some tips on where to search a sandy beach and what equipment to take?

Be most grateful for any ideas and encouragement.

well take an open attitude and don't expect to find Blackbeard's treasure on the first haul. But seriously equipment wise you need a trash/treasure pouch, a sand scoop designed for treasure hunting, and sunscreen.

Hunt the 15 feet of sand from where waves stop at low tide. Use a zig-zag pattern to find pockets of coins. Best time is two hours before and after the low tide when hunting 'wet' sand.

Hunt where people sit on beach.
Hunt up close to dunes where beach meets dunes. this is most productive if water can reach dunes during storms. If you find nothing here - try somewhere else on beach. Learn the lay of the land and see where your beach is most productive. Between jetties where people swim is ideal target area.

Learn how to use your detector and tune properly. Without doing this - the odds of finding anything but trash can go way down.

Be patient - you will find lots of stuff. Big hits on beach are gold rings and diamond rings. Good luck! HH!

Open attitude - no problem, Blackbeards treasure - not sure he frequented these parts! Sun screen? Hey, this is South Wales, today is misty, cloudy, damp but my enthusiasm is high.

Not so sure what a sand scoop is so will have to improvise today. I'll probably buy a garden soil seive and a small spade.

I must master the art of tuning but I guess just getting on with it and learning by my mistakes will prove useful.

Try the sites below, a club in your area can be a lot of help and the outings are great. it takes a while to get the hang of using a detector, i have been treasure hunting for 20 years and i still learn something new every week, i just wonder when i will stop making mistakkkes. good hunting. boomer

I live in South Wales and my nearest beaches are Southerndown, Ogmore-by-Sea. Barry and Porthcawl are a short drive away.

Hi John,
One site you should not miss it will give you all the basics, it's by Allan Hassle. He's an ozzie but lives over here now London He started shallow water hunting and His site will give you a lot of basics. I am a complete novice as Yourself and from His site I have gained years of His experience,(still havent found anything yet LOL) anyway
