This is the best coin that I have ever found.

I was out on Saturday, hunting an old area of town... I decided to hit this little park... I have hit it before, but only found modern clad. Most of the area has been graded, so I didn't expect to find anything good. There are a couple of areas where there are large old trees... and the ground has not been graded. I went and hit those areas.

I get a nice hit on the Deus, right at the base of one of the big trees. I dug down... maybe 5" and out pops this coiny looking disc... really dirty and crudy. I put it in my pouch and kept moving. After a few minutes, I pulled it out and looked at it again... but had no idea what it was, not silver and not the right size for any coin I have ever found... I was not sure that it was even a coin. When I got home and started to clean it up... I began to think that it might be a large cent... I could see the outline of Liberty's head... I could hardly believe my eyes.

The ID appears to be Coronet Head LC made between 1816 and 1839. There are no visible numbers of letters on the coin.
Thanks for looking!

Nice, put her away in some mineral oil for about six months for a long bath, then wake her, you might get a date after that?
Congrats!

Thanks Treblehunter. Thanks for all of your help on Saturday! I want to be like YOU when I grow up.

I got her in the mineral oil bath right now.

Nice!!

I found my 1st one about this time last year ; it was Smoothed out on both sides into a Saucer Shape & has 3 little holes Punched through it . It was def, made into a Button at some time long ago as the patina is a match all around the coin heck the only way I could tell it was a LC was from looking at it through a magnifying glass & could catch a hint of the head ' same type as yours "Cornet Head" ' The Reverse is completely Smooth.

Great Find

Not as Common here in the South, IMO , As TNGUNS Proves As Well.

Davers

Excellent find! Super old no matter the date!

Hopefully this will be the first of many large coppers for you. Congrats on your nice find.

CongratsI love seeing a crusty green disk come out of the ground. Good Luck getting in the 1700's!

Nice find! Thanks for sharing...

awesome find tom!, I feel your pain of not being able to date your first LC!, the impatience of soaking the coin is a pain in the neck!

great save

Still think they are the coolest coin to find! Congrats

I learned a long time ago in Metal Detecting, never assume....congrats man!

WTG on your 1st LC! Now you're hooked, lol!

Congrats on your first large cent. I have to tell you, I think your coin is a candidate for hot peroxide. It looks more like there is a crust on the surface than corrosion. If that's the case, there's a good chance putting it in some hot peroxide for a few minutes might knock that crud right off. This doesn't work on a coin that is corroded as well as having crust. Your piece doesn't look that corroded. If it were mine I'd give it a shot. I've already found 15 large cents this year and know some of them can't be improved, but some can.

I see the nice stuff that you find on TNet. Thanks for the tip.

As soon as I found it, I contacted one of the guys on TNet that finds LCs all of the time. He suggested hot peroxide, so I went to it. I have boiled it in peroxide... several times... that black crust just won't come off of the coin. I even tried gently scraping it off...please don't cringe... but nothing. I am now soaking it in mineral oil to see if that loosens the black crud.

Thanks again for the tip.
GL&HH!
