My first season of detecting (2010) was fantastic! I had so much fun, and I am truly hooked. My first significant find was a 1929 Standing liberty quarter, it was only a couple of weeks after I got my detector. The next good find was a 1902 barber half! It was so dirty, but the olive oil method worked pretty good. The rest of the summer was filled with finding clad coinage mixed with a decent number of silver coins. I found 7 rings (5 silver, 2 junk), but I wasn't finding any gold. SO I decided to hit a favourite spot and dig every signal...I was rewarded with a gold cufflink (in two pieces). It was the only gold I found all season, but another great find was soon to come.
I went to a spot my father-in-law told me about, and found my first Indian Head penny. It was very exciting, and I was able to find more of them at this spot. I was really hoping to find a Barber dime at this location, but it was not to be. My 4th or 5th hunt at this spot produced my best find yet (I'll probably never top this). I got a massive silver signal, figured it was a pop can, dug a large plug, out came an 1896 Morgan, 1896 's' half, and a 1904 half!!!
I had other neat finds as well. I found many Canada Customs, Canada Immigration, U.S. Customs buttons. I Dug up a pocket spill of 3 Indian Head pennies with a "V" nickel, found 2 Canadian "fish scales"(5 cent silver), and many "Wheaties" and Canadian coins from the teens to now. I also dug a silver bracelet and was able to return it to the owner (lost it 35 or 40 years ago).
My total finds are:
Coins: 1270
Silver coins: 54
Total face value: just under $70
Silver rings: 5
Most valuable find: the 1896"s" and 1904 Barber halves...each probably $250-$300!
Hopefully the 2011 season will be as good as my first one, but so far I am way behind lol. I really enjoy reading everyone's posts and pictures on this site, it's inspiring and informative. I don't post very often, but I figured I'd get my first season totals up for others to see. Thanks, and HAPPY HUNTING!
