My first significant find!! Help!!

Out detecting today on some private land. Chose a house site that was pre civil war. About 15 in I dig this gem up. I don't know much about it other than my suspicions of it being a button??

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Front says " US ", back is plain or corroded beyond reading words.

It is definitely a US Army uniform collar-disc insignia. Terry's guess about its time-period seems to be correct... it looks like the 1910-to-1924 version. But for certainty to make sure it is 1910-24 instead of 1924-37, clean it enough to clearly see the background-pattern around the letters, and look for an exact match-up here:
