chain is probably still out there
when you find a chain and its clasp is open or chain is broke - look for pendant(s)
if you find a pendant - then it came off of a broke chain - look for the chain

Crusader cross. Here's what Wikipedia says:
The Jerusalem cross (also known as "Five-fold Cross", or "cross-and-crosslets") is a heraldic cross and Christian cross variant consisting of a large cross potent surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. It was used as the emblem and coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the 1280s. Gary

just a couple examples of where i found a pendant - then spiraled out from it to find the chain
gold one was from saltwater shallows at a spot they body surf at (ive averaged a chain a visit there i believe because of the body surfers)
chain was a few feet away
The other is large silver = found pendant in thigh deep water and spiraled out to get the chain a few feet away
have gotten others the same way
