Well just let me start by saying I'm somewhat of an amateur historian and archaeologist. I've been working this summer on a Pottawatomie Indian excavation in northern Indiana, and just recently returned to North Carolina and started metal detecting with my daughter. This is the first silver artifact we have found. It was found early this morning buried about 6 inches below the surface and was a pretty big deal to my little girl. Not much really, but it is stamped "925" and appears to be 10-20 years old IMHO. I've also identified an old contest/meeting place from the 1860's on that i just secured permission to detect this morning. I secured permission even though it is a city park due to the historical significance of the site. The site is near what was a training center for confederate soldiers, and was used to hold cavalry riding contests and political/social gatherings in that era. It's unique in that it has been a public park almost exclusively since that time, but I've never heard the entire history mentioned. Not only that but I've never seen anyone metal detecting it at all. I found the history in an obscure manuscript housed at the local library. I'm interested in finding someone in the Asheville,NC area to help with this hunt. So if your interested drop me a line!
