I had the whole day off from work so I packed up my gear and headed out to a place where I had found 4 Wheaties last fall. I hunted all morning and found six coins but none of them were old. There was a small dump sight where I found some old glass bleach bottles that were broken so I scored the caps off of them. I was getting a little discouraged with not finding any decent coins yet so I went back to the car for lunch. Well after lunch I went back out and got a wheatie right away so things were looking good. Then I came upon a signal that was bouncing around in the silver range, I got a pull tab out of the hole and I couldn't locate the other signal I was hearing so I pushed all the dirt back into the hole. And I started to walk away, then I thought to myself I better sweep it again...bing bing bing solid dime signal only it was just outside of the hole I dug. It was about 2" down and as soon as I seen the beautiful sight of a silver edge sandwiched between two clumps of dirt I yelled woooo hooo Silver baby! I couldn't believe my eyes finally after one year of detecting I scored a silver coin. It's a 42' Merc in very nice condition, sorry for the terrible pictures. No more coins after that but I did find a nice Pepsi Cola bottle and some other bottles and gars I thought were cool but not to old. Well thanks for reading about my first silver find.

Mercs are a favorite of mine - I think they are gorgeous coins!

More will come now that the dam has broken - good thing you rechecked that hole!

Now, you'll see start to see more silver in the future as
your mind leads you to silver spots. The mind seems to

Yo Brother, HUGE CONGRATS on your first silver!!! And it just so happens to be a sweet looking Merc and you didn't scratch it! It was such a relief when you called and told me the news, because now that burden of finding your first silver is past you... and on the upcoming group hunt you can just focus on pulling the silver coins that are sticking to the bottom of your coil off :)

I wish I was there with you to be able to give you a high five for your first silver. I'll owe you one on Tuesday when you come up here :)

Sweeeet!

Yup you always remember your when you brake your silver virginity :D

Hey Tim, Congrats on your first silver and especially it being a Merc! Wish I could have been there to see your face when you popped that one up. Well, you'll be digging a lot more of them at the big hunt this weekend, so get ready for a great time! CU then!!!

Looking on this great site, you would think that Mercury dimes were a dime a dozen......aaahh....but not the case. I was probably close to 2 years out before I found my first Mercury dime and it was also a 1942. I remember it well..........Great looking dime and Happy Hunting......gregd573

Congrats, my first was a merc too. Bet you got a big rush. They'll keep coming.

Time and patience....seems you got both.

Congrats on the first...
