Went out to a new field and scanned around just to see if there was anything in it. Turns out there was a couple good items. Found my first token. I think it's aluminum, and it's in rough shape. Been hit by a plow a few times looks like. It says, "Good for 5 cents in merchandise, 'Billiard Room', Southern Hotel, Elizabeth City N.C." I couldn't find anything online about the token and how old it was. I think the hotel it's referring to was built in the mid-late 1800's though. Could be a late 19th century token! :) Also found a button which has a concave back on it. Not sure how old, but it looks old. Also found the 1945 silver war nickel. There was a lot of junk found too, but I'll take the results for the 1.5 hours I was out there.

Happy Hunting!

-Nate

Thanks! Happy to be part of the club now!

The hotel was named the 'Southern Hotel' in 1902 and renamed the 'New Southern Hotel' in 1925.
That should indicate the date range of your token.

Thanks Don! I appreciate the help.

Dirtdigger,
One legend is the Wright Bros. stayed there occasionally enroute to/from Kitty Hawk.
Wouldn't that be a 'hoot' to think one of the Wright Bros. handled that token !!

I just read that too! That would be crazy! Not sure how Orville and Wilbur dropped their token in Suffolk, Va though. Guess their plane flew further than the record books show!

I tried soaking the button and scrubbing it with a toothbrush to see if I could get anything off it. I was hoping it was a 1 piece button of some kind, but it appears to just be smooth. Oh well. It still adds to the collection.

Good job! I see you still have the golden horseshoe tucked firmly in your grasp. Can I have it for a few days please? I am ready to hunt some more, just one more weekend of deer hunting.

Nice finds for 1.5 hours. :icon_thumleft: Sweet token! Congrats on what hopefully will be the first of many.
