So I set out today with one goal in mind; to find at least one ring to hit the "50" mark. I've been determined to do this before the hunting year is over.

I went to one spot where I always dig up lots of older nickels; late 40's to low 60's but silver never shows up. Neither have any rings for that matter but I figured I might get lucky. As usual, I dug lots of nickels and other clad but not much of anything else (besides trash).

So I went to one of my other standby fields and started swinging. After hunting for maybe 45 minutes and digging lots of trash and more clad, I got a nice high hit and dug up this......

Saint Jude Medal & Ring Number 50 001.webp

Its a small, once gold plated band. It's marked "1/60 10k RGP " with the makers mark ">M-H<". I tracked it down and it's made by McGrath-Hamin of Providence, RI. The RGP stands for "rolled gold plate". It's 1/60th genuine 10K gold. Oh boy; another piece for the junk pile.

Although it's junk, it's still ring # 50 so my prayer was answered and I'm grateful.

Then I hunted a while longer and after a while got another really nice high hit and out of the hole popped this........

Saint Jude Medal & Ring Number 50 002.webp Saint Jude Medal & Ring Number 50 003.webp

...a Sterling St. Jude medal. It's kinda' small but it's a little more silver so once again, I'm happy. I actually really like this one. The image of St. Jude is really thick and it cleaned up nice.

I'm wondering if it's old based on where I found it and the fact that it's pretty scratched and worn. It's also marked "Chapel Sterling".

So then it got too dark to hunt so I called it quits. I finished the day with a pretty nice pile of clad and of course, lots of trash.
Overall I think this day ended well. I got my wish plus a little silver bonus. Now on to 100 rings by this time next year (hopefully).......

I guess that's about it.
Thanks for looking & HH......

Good job on finding #50 for the year! That's no easy feat. How about going for 52? One for each week of the year.

Sure is a nice silver Catholic medal.

NICE RING AND PENDANT 424 .....

Hey Congrats on Ring #50. That's an AWESOME milestone! It's amazing what comes out of the ground, eh?!

I've a few RGP's myself, and some of them are "newish" looking enough that they were heart stoppers... :(

Skippy!

I thought it was real at first but I was thinking silver. It rang up really high.
Musta' been that genuine low grade steel under that plating that fooled my detector.

But seriously; it IS amazing what's right under our feet pretty much everywhere. I never imagined I'd have a growing gold and silver jewelry collection when I started playing around with my 30.00 Tracker IV last year.

Congrats on #50
That medallion is really a nice one.
St. Jude is the Patron Saint of Hope and impossible causes.

Thanks. Looks like another mini wave goin' on. I got an Allah medal not a week ago not too far from where this one turned up.

And yeah, I was raised in a huge Catholic family. I'm pretty familiar with the Saints. Ol' Jude gets the truly hopeless cases.
Sounds like a tough job to me.

Nice work with the ring count and like the medal.
I never found a round religious one.
I did find a gold plater like that once ( a bit wider) about 13" down. Nearly fell over and then got home to see the mark or lack thereof.
Still a great day you had.

Congrats on number 50 you bogart. Still looking for my 1st gold ring in 2 seasons. Awesome score.

Thanks.

Just keep digging trash. Sooner or later the gold will appear.

You should see how much trash I got rid of yesterday. I've been throwing it in a box in the trunk of my car lately and it was practically spilling over.
For that whole box of trash I dug one gold ring. It seems like silver has been the thing for me lately.

I don't even count gold plated as gold; it's just a ring.

If you REALLY want to find a gold ring, hunt heavily used sports fields and dig everything. The longer the fields have been in use, the better.
Just make up your mind to clean all of the trash from the entire field including the sidelines, around bleachers and everywhere people congregate. Dig everything above iron; including foil. There's bound to be at least one. It's a numbers game. For every 500 pull tabs you dig you MIGHT get lucky and find some gold.

This last ring was the 8th ring I've pulled from the same field over a year and that's not including the necklaces, medals and quite a few junk bracelets, earrings and pins. I've pulled thousands of pieces of trash as well and still steadily dig up trash every time I hunt the site. The place was heavily used at one time.

There's one area where the backstop used to be that I've been cleaning out from day one. I figure I'm maybe halfway done at this point. I always make a point to spend at least 15-20 minutes or so removing pull tabs, can slaw and bottle caps from that area before I move on. I've pulled three rings from that area so far; all junkers but my gut tells me that there's still something good in there.

For whatever reason, many people refuse to leave their good jewelry at home when they know they're going to be playing sports. They fall off frequently. Chains and necklaces break during contact sports.

The same applies to beaches and swimming holes, both near and in the water. It's getting too cold for water hunting but it'll be warming up again in about 6 months.

There's still a chance as long as the weather holds out.
