Hi Team, I know this is not much at all but it is a mile stone for me. I have been MD for about 1 month so far and I have found a bunch of clad but nothing very old. I was hunting my yard after I mowed yesterday evening and I found 2 nickels, One was a 1969 and the other was a 1939!!!! I looked in my Red Book to see if it is silver or not but I can not tell from that book. Can any one tell me if nickels from that year were silver or cooper? I do not have a camera so I can not post a picture yet. Thanks for any help!!!

Hey, Sarge—
The WWII period silver-content nickels were struck only from 1942 to 1945. (Some of the 42's are silver; some aren't.) If it's a silver nickel, there will be a large mintmark (P, D, or S) above the dome of Mnticello on the reverse, as shown below.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my post. I am new but learning!

39 was the first year jeffersons were made...too bad it wasn't one year older :)

Congrats on your find! Still looking forward to getting over your way and hunting that farm one day ;D

Hi Master Sarge
Glad to see the Prizm V is finding some goodies for you. Were these coins any deeper than your previous finds?
Keep at it.

You use the same equipment as me! except I put a bigfoot coil on mine.

Nice going on your oldest coin, It just gets better

Thanks guys!! I get a lot hope just reading some of your alls finds and that is what keeps me going. I found the 69 around 2 inches and the 39 nickel about 3 1/2 inches. What is the Big Foot Coil?

Jeffersons actually started in 1938; check the back to the right of Monticello for a mintmark.

It stead being round and having a cone shaped detection Field, a big foot is about two feet long by 3 inches [?] and the depth of the coil goes straight down from one end along the whole length and back up on the other

round = v bigfoot = i________i this is what the magnetic Field looks like.

Thanks BIG61AL is that something I should look into getting for me? And what is the differance in it as far as hunting? Is it a deeper searching coil? Is it more for coins or relics?

Why I like it is because it will detect the whole length of the coil and can cover a lot of ground with on sweep. Because it is narrow I can pinpoint a target with other targets [both trash and good ones] without getting mixed signals. Plus I can point pin far more accurately than with a round coil. Most times I can get my pin point spot from the coil and put the tip of hand held pin point directly on top of my target. I reccomend getting a bigfoot, just be sure to tell you have a prizm because other models have a different configurations on the cable connectors....I found out the hard way.

WTG Sarge--The silver is just around the corner.

If the 1939 nickel has the mint mark of "D" then it is worth anywhere from $6.00 to $14.00 the red book said it was worth six but a coin collector bought mine for $14.00. considering I found it at lunch in my change that is a big investment. Hope it is a "D" mint mark. ;D k.k.

nice find sarge the older coins are out there waiting for you good luck and hh

Thanks everyone!!! I am going to buy me a camera this evening so I can post all my Silver and Gold that I WILL be finding to share with all of you all!!!Also, my oldest son turns 8yrs old this month and he is wanting his own MD. Do you all think he is to young to have his own? And if not what would be a good machine for someone his age?
