I went back to the woods that have yielded some nice couns over the years but no coins that are particularly old (1920s, max). Found an area with several clean 80-81 signals on the ATP, but they were all Memorial Lincolns.

Last signal was 87-88 so I figured it was a quarter, but it was a 1730 King George II halfpenny instead. I thought it was a Large Cent right out of the ground (pre/post cleaned below):

Thanks for all the feedback. I agree about the woods being a great place to hunt-- often the signals that sound like "good signals" actually turn out to be good targets, and there's much less ground chatter than parks, beaches, etc. My oldest finds have been from wooded areas.

About the coin; I assume that that KG coins would only be used in the colonies/(states) up until the War, but not after (can anyone confirm?).

The Coin I was talking about 'that I dug in NW Atlanta, turned out to be a King George ??? 1912 Penny. My 1st Unmodified Large Cent / Penny. Has Nice detail tho.
