So today I found a new house to hunt about 30min away. It also happened to be within a few min of a friend of mine who happened to say she would be out in her pool all day, so naturally I thought it would be a great to go detect and then go hang out in the pool for a while with her. I decided to hit a house that I had hunted a month ago or so with my hunting partner Lee. We hit the yard pretty hard then and pulled out close to 10 wheats a piece I think. I also got a couple silver mercs and an indian head penny. The grass was about 7" high when we hit it, so we both figured it still had some goodies left in it. My first few targets were all trash. Then I went back to the sidewalk area to hunt where I found a mercury last time. Get a good signal... dig down about 6".... it's green.... it's a memorial... psh... Then a few feet from there I pulled out a wheatie.

Then I'm hunting around the porch and get a broken up nickel signal. About 5" down I pulled out a 1941 jefferson nickel. Then I look back in the hole and there is a nice 1943 mercury dime just hanging out on its edge. I rescan the hole and find another jefferson nickel, this one being 1957.

It was sooooooooo hot that I was wanting to get out of there because I assumed we had gotten it all.... BUT I forced myself to go hunt by the big old tree. On the way there I pulled out that little toy gun. On the sides it reads POLICE 45.. any id help would be awesome guys! :)

Then I got that cool buckle as I creeped closer to the tree.... and then I got a hit that SCREAMED silver at me... and it was only showing about 3" deep. I was honestly expecting a silver rosie... but out pops an 1854 Seated Liberty Quarter! WOW! My first one ever! I skipped over Standing Liberty and Barbers and went straight to the Seated! :):):)

I then got two more wheats on the day. The dates are 1945, 1936, and one that is too cruddy to read the date. The house that I was originally driving to had 37 cents in clad in the yard. Hope everyone is bearing the heat well! :)

Anyone have an idea on the grade of this coin? I don't know how to grade a seated quarter. On the obverse of the coin on the left side are what looks like scratches, but they are cat hairs that stuck to it when I was done rinsing it off. :)

You have just as many old houses over there in Ohio that I would love to be hunting at as well :)

So far I have asked permission three times to hunt private property and have been granted permission. I just don't know how to approach a peron's home and ask for permission to hunt their yards. lol I know which houses in my neighborhood are old and the dates they were built.

I know the feeling there! Most of the time when I ask it's like I just asked to murder their mother. They give me this look like I'm a horrible person for even thinking of such a thing. But it never hurts to try. :)

You da man, Bsco! I only found one special quarter - 1904 Barber quarter. I would grade your coin in VF. That Explorer treats you well. Keep it up, dude!

Thanks bud! I found a seated dime before I ever found my first barber dime as well. And then a seated quarter before a standing liberty and barber.... just odd how it all works out! I'm still a good distance behind you in the indian head penny count for the year... I gotta catch up, I'm slacking, haha.

Congrats on that nice silver Brian, does look to be in very good condition! HH, Mike

Very, very nice....be deep and be Seated.....or in your case, be shallow and be Seated.... I'm sure the root system held it up....just when you think you have this hobby figured out.....great day for you, congratulations!

Yeah... I never expected to find a seated coin this shallow. Oddly enough there were no roots within a few inches in either direction on this coin, so I don't know how it was held up for so long.

really nice finds. Is there any other makers mark on the pistol....there are so many tgoy 45's out there

woo hoo Brian !!! wtg buddy! :) sweet find !!

holy cowwww,, man that is a oiece of beauty there !! congrads on another first find.. ;D

Big Congrats Bscofield,

Those are one of the hardest coins to find.

Sometimes it goes that way. You'll skip over the newer and find the old.

With all the lawns you hunt your bound to find good stuff.

HH Jer

Right on Brian! Great find!

I've only dug one seated quarter, and it was only 2" deep.

I think the bigger coins just don't sink as fast sometimes. I've dug old silver halves at an inch or two several times, and the one silver dollar I dug was only an inch deep. True, I have dug some really deep quarters, but I think you can see what I'm saying.

Wow, congrats big time on that beautiful Seated Brian.
Get back there, dig some more.

Next time, go straight to the gold coin my friend,
the heck with all the steps between.

Smiles!

Wow man! That was one awesome day you had ! I guess that made losing 10 pounds in the scorching heat well worth it !
