My Soggy Saturday - Buff & Lrg. Bullet

I met up with RWSNC (Bob) and B|ker (Bill) this morning at the 1830 CW house. The place was saturated with water from all the rain we've been getting. You know when you dig a hole and it fills in with water, it's soggy. :'( We could have done some mud wrestling, but no one brought their wrestling tights. We mainly hunted on high ground around the house until more rain hit at noon. B|ker outdid us on coins today with some kind of green & yellow detector called a "Garrett 250". When I first saw the colors I thought it was a John Deere detector. :tongue3: ::) ;D He did pretty good though.
My measly finds were:

*1935 Buff Nickel

*A large 3-ringer bullet. This has to be the largest one in my collection. Over 1" long, and 3/4" wide!!! As heavy as it is, they could have thrown this thing in the CW and killed someone!
What kind and size is this beast?

*Three Niagara silver plated spoons.
(B. Manley- Looks like one of your hunts. :D  )

*A decorative piece, a salt shaker lid, a broken button back, and a Hubley toy piece.

Not much of a hunt, but we'll do better once it dries out.

MM,
That bullet looks like McKee & Mason 323 due to its size and snubbed nose. That's my best guess at this point.
Diameter: .715
Length: 1.080
.72/.73 caliber
Foreign rifle musket

Buckleboy

BB,
Thanks so much for the ID. I went to one of those bullet ID web sites, but didn't realize there were so many different styles, sizes, names, etc.
Like a needle in a haystack to ID for a rookie like me.

Hey MM
Just looked at your post, nice finds! Seems like you always find something decent. As I was scrolling down through your pics,I freaked out when I seen your button back. It is from Racine,my hometown, located about 20 miles south of Milwaukee and about 80 miles north of Chicago. The weird part is my Grandma used to work there,it was called Badger shirt and uniform at that time. I will have to do a little research, but I'm sure it was the same place and the name was changed at sometime.
Grandma probably didn't make that button,I'm sure it's a lot older than she was! LOL
Keep on digging!

Diehard,
Thank you for that info. That button back had me stumped. Great info.
I know this backing is in sad shape, but PM me your address & I'll mail it to you. It means more to you and your family than it does to me.
I really have no need for it.
Thanks,
Doug

Real nice finds!

Re: My Soggy Saturday - Buff & Lrg. Bullet

Your going to need some help getting this one ID`d.

At .72 Cal x 25.4mm= 18.288mm cartridge, only the big boys carried these around.

FYI 25.4mm = 1 inch

Still looking through my weapons encyclopedia to see if i can find something around the 18mm size.

This link is cool though.

Kinda glad all that stuff stayed south Doug.....It was either you or me 8).Glad you all got out and Congrat's on the buffalo, still lookin'.The Lrg. Bullet is hard to determine, get some measurement's.....They made the 3ringer heavy cal.'s up to huge, huger, and hugest ;D Nice relic's.....Congrat's and HH!!

Thanks Civil.
Can you tell by the measurements on the ruler above, or are there other measurements needed?
-Doug-
I think BB hit the nail on the head Doug,.715 x 1.080,most likely a .72 cal. That's between "huger and hugest".I might have a used digital caliper at work I could send your way, take's all the guess work out of the ruler method. There are so many variant's out there it's not even funny.Still looking for a .72 myself....Nice job!!

Wouldn't this bullet be too big for that rifle?
Aren't Enfield bullets smooth (on rings) bullets
I'm so confused. :icon_scratch: :tongue3: ??? :icon_scratch: :tongue3: ???

I think so. I think you should be looking at .75 cal. I've been searching the net.

Doug.... I've got to golf tomorrow at 10:00. If you like I can drop by work before I go, with a set of digital calipers and a digital scale, so you can take some measurements, if that will help.

Yeah, I'm going with BB's ID. He really knows his stuff on bullets & relics.
If you have a used digital calipers I would love one, but I want to send you something for it. I've been wanting to get one, but haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for the offer.

Golfing? I hope you're not swatting golf balls with that Minelab.
Thanks for the offer, but I have calipers & scales in our lab at work.
Any silver today?
