I've completed my very first hunt today & am really excited about my finds! They may not be super valuable but finding them was so much fun!

The first thing I found was a 2001 dime. I forgot to take a picture of it before hand but it was pretty tarnished. Still is to a degree but I'm working on it.

The second thing I found was an Ax head! What made this really cool form me was that a root from the tree it was under had grown through the hole where the handle should have been!

I'm working on cleaning it up & will attach a picture of the progress later.

The downsides I found with my Garrett ACE 150 was that, even on a lower sensitivity, it seemed to consistently pick up "Iron" signals but would lose them after I dug the spot. My dad had mentioned that the cause may have been because of the region I'm in. Would Georgia red clay cause the detector to go off like that?

The Ax head registered as "Coin" so I'm not sure what kind of metal it's made of yet. Any ideas or guesses?

Hi Diana wish we lived closer Im trying to find other women to hunt with Im in Mass.

I didn't realize you could clean up rotted iron axes and tools and reuse them. I thought the iron would be weaker?
I have found quite a few things like axes, pick axes and hoes and never knew what to do with them.

Debi, many people here clean old tools in apple cider vinegar. Just wire brush all the loose rust from the item and soak overnight or even a day in the vinegar. Brush it again and keep repeating until happy. Many then seal the item in boiled linseed oil ( get from a hardware store ) to preserve it's looks in a vintage way. Good luck!

Welcome to the addiction that is Detecting !

Here's an updated pic of the Ax head. I'm going to let it rest & allow the root to dry a good bit more before I attempt to remove it.

Thanks to everyone for the welcomes & the advice! :)

Very nice finds and I love you enthusiasm. I can tell your excited and that's awesome. You can put your axe head in apple cider vinegar and it will slowly eat the rust off of it . Just leave it for a few days , pull it out and brush off the loose stuff. Put it back in and continue until you like the way it looks. It may take a month or more. If it gets to looking really grungy in there dump it out and put some new ACV in. Good luck out there

Cool first finds! :)
