Pulled this item out of roughly 60 feet of water at a flooded quarry today while magnet fishing. It's marked, "MARBLE'S GLADSTONE, MICH. USA," and "30 GOV." I believe it may be a headspace guage for the government .30 caliber carbine, but I cant find any examples of this style anywhere. Any ideas would he greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, broken shell extractor. I have one like it for 5.56. Threw me off with the expander piece missing.

.30 Gov could also mean 30-40 Krag made for the springfield armory model 1898 used by the US circa 1900

i think 30 gov '06 was the old designation for 30-06, 30 gov '03 was its short lived predecessor the 30-03

Interesting find! :occasion14:

I'm reaching for this... 30-40 Krag???

You're absolutely right. After measuring the steps, overall length and width of the rim, it is 30-06. Marble's told me that these were manufactured for the army beginning in WW1! Cant imagine how it ended up in a flooded quarry.
