Mystery Bird

Hello All,
Yesterday found 6 of us Pa. boys enjoying the warm but somewhat windy weather on the Red Soil of Va. DeArmitt Pa found this Mystery Piece at what we believe was a minor Union Camp. It's Iron and seems to be an Eagle possibly sitting on some Cannonballs. Anyone have any ideas on this one. As so many of our finds goes this is just of piece of something. He just thought it was a piece of iron that made it into his good finds pouch.

looks to be a "shard" of some kind, but would need more specifics.. maybe the eagle was carved on to an artillery shell shard at a later time?

The piece is 3/16th of an inch thick by 1 3/4 inch long 1 1/16th wide.
