Well the button has 13 stars on it, but it looks more like a snap or rivet. These are all found in a woodland site from 1800s on up. The coin is strange. it is about the same size as a nickel. but it's very smooth except for those pitted marks. It doesn't seem to be the same metal as a nickel like a buffalo or a v nickel. feels kind of heavy for its size.

Here is the button...

As Jewelerguy indicated, your button is a US Army M-1941 coveralls "tack button" (also called a rivet-button), used on coveralls made of "Herring Bone Twill" (HBT) fabric. Here are a couple of photos, showing your button on the HBT coveralls, and showing the "construction" of the type of button you found.

Here is another thread talking about the same button: Star button (Sep 06, 2007)

Great info on the button folks. so I guess its not too old but at least there's a design on it. seems like all my flat buttons are blanks except for maybe the back. as far as the coin goes I'm leaning towards fatty Indian Head cent. it's about the right thickness and I think I can make out the Indian looking left. It would also make sense about the different metal composition.
