Hi All,

I dug a brass flat button today, which has a distinct design. Can anyone recognize it or tell me anything about it? It was found in suburban Chicago near a preserve which was first settled in the early 1830s. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Nice flat button, I'd say late 1700s.

Found this and according to this chart, I believe the above button would be consistent with the 1812-1820 time period (3 down, 2nd column). Do others read it the same way?

There was a specific time when these large greatcoat buttons were in vogue in Britain and presumably the colonies. I think it was about 1790 to 1810 but you could check. I think "Crusader" called them "dandy buttons" and that has stuck with users on this site. They certainly would have been showy!

Thanks! Never heard of "dandy buttons." I'll research them online.
