I dug this back in the 70's and it has always caught my interest whenever I go through my junk box. I though now with the internet I might find something about it. I did find a little about the company (Sam Biern NY) He started making buttons in 1933 and continued for 28 years. So this isn't as old as I thought it was. I still don't know what the heck it is. In addition to buttons he made jewelry and badges. This piece is bent pretty bad and some may be missing it appears to be made from copper sheet. Anyone know what this is?

I looked at some of the vintage jewelry available online of the Kinghts of Columbus, Knights of Pythias and the Knights Templar. Didn't see any matches for your item, but that doesn't mean it's not affilated with one of these organizations.

Spanish conquistador maybe?

Odd though most of the buttons I do find from him are flowrs and such.
