Mystery lake find. What is it?

So I found this not to long ago while I was out fishing and it looks neat. I thought maybe a handle to a gun but it's metal and heavy. Wishful thinking, I know. But I'm lost on what it could be. What do you think?

my first thought was that it was part of a cast iron frame from a vintage school desk.

Part of a brake pad? I would bet it was last used as a trot line weight.
