I hit a mid 1800's homestead yesterday that had activity through the early 1900's. The very first signal of the day was this cool lid with what I think might be a religious symbol. It is a little larger than a silver dollar. I can find nothing online suggesting what this might be. We have found French and German items in this area. Any help or thoughts you good people might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi; First is that it is purely Decorative Symbolism. That it may have been used by a Religious person but NOT by the Church itself. If it had been used by the Church itself the Cross would NEVER have been placed through the Crown. The Design would have shown the Cross placed ABOVE the Crown. If it had Papal Signifigance then it would have been made of Pure Gold or Silver, NOT Copper ok. I believe it may have been used as a lid to a Holy Water Vessel or container. Holy Water is used as a means of "Cleansing","Healing" or "Blessing". That is the only Religious signifigance it has ok. Nice find. PEACE:RONB :leprechaun-hat:

Hi; The solder marks are where the lid would have attached to the hinges. The green you see is caused by the Holy Water coming into contact with the lid ok. Holy Water was used for all of the above stated Curses ok. In this case the person that used this Holy Water was not a Priest but rather a very Religious person, possibly a Mason, to use in his Daily Rituals ok. I know this because I served the Roman Catholic Church for 7 1//2 Years before going in the Military. I served under 2 Cardinals. Cardinal Mediero's & Cardinal Law. I have almost as much Seminarian Training as any Seminarian around ok. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

its a religious symbol used by the catholic --knights of Columbus group ..as well as the masons -- the crown of Christ AROUND the cross he died upon ( life over death) ==often seen with (IHS) under it ..... LATIN =( IN HOC SIGNO)--in this sign we shall conquer (evil)

the green color is due to the copper /bronze nature of the metal ..over time it becomes green when exposed to the elements --old bronze statues often look this way --)note at one time it might have been gilt / gold plated which might have worn off over time)

in the old days during the holidays catholic churches used to use frankensince to make "holy smoke" in thier riituals ==this might be a container cover for it

a lot of the french and germans that came from Europe during the late 1800 early 1900 time frame were cathloics
