Greetings all. First post.

My sons and I found this unit on a working farm where US Calvary skirmished with Confederate infantry supported by 5 cannon. Can anyone identify it?

About 2" wide.
3" long.
1/2" threaded hole.
1/2" thick steel.
1.25" diameter circular hook

Can't tell you exactly what this was off of but many wagons had nuts like this on the end of cross rods that held the drop-in tail board in tight. Could have been used for anchor points to lash freight onto wagons or possibly on cannons or ammo wagons.

Heel nut, used for attaching chains. Chain link is placed in the hook which is then hammered closed.

By the way...Is "Heel Nut" the correct terminology? Do you have any links or sources you could direct me to? Appreciate your knowledge and would like to expand mine. Thank you!

sorry....wrong quote above. (I'm still working my way around forum navigation) Heel Nut is the official terminology? Can you direct me to links or sources to further delve into this?

The proper term may be heel bolt? There's a modern one on ebay listed as plow heel bolt.

Thank you very much for all the above. Plow Heel Bolt most closely resembles what I have and has helped me identify other metal because it came off a horse or mule drawn cultivator, in which steel plate (blade) was identified.
