Hey guys, I found two great buttons this morning in Fairfax County, Virgina. I've never found old buttons before so any help with ID and/or value would be greatly appreciated.

The smaller appears to be a NC Civil War button. The larger one has gold gilting on it has an older looking shank.

My MD buddy steve immediately recognized the first as a CW button. Any way to tell if it's real or not.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

First one is a North Carolina State Seal button ;D

That NC state seal is a really nice find. When I find a military button and a flat or coin button in the same area, I usually feel like it was lost by one of the soldiers. So I would feel that way about the button you dug.

Great North Carolina button! Looks like one of the NC 8 series, made by Confederate local manufacturers.

Nice Button!!! In Fairfax?? Wow.. Didn't think there were many places left to dig there??? All houses...

Nice going!!

Anyone have any idea of the value? Is there a grading system to buttons? What grade is this one?

Very nice finds. Two great buttons.NC button is in pretty good shape.CONGRATS!!!!!

That is a fantastic NC Button you got there. It is not often you find one that can be read clearly and finding one with GILT remaining is even harder to come across (at least in Virginia Soil). It may be just my bad luck but, of the half dozen I've found, only one comes close to yours. That is a great first for you. As far as price goes....it really depends on the market demand. I've seen them fo ras little as $40 and as much as $150 for dug examples.

The guilded one is 1750s-1780s.

This is officially my best find to date.

I've changed my avatar!

Thanks for all the info,
Jason
