I've been visiting TNET for a couple of months. Really enjoy seeing what fellow collectors find. My favorite pastime in my growing up years was looking for points in the surrounding farms. I"ve just in the last few mths started again. A friend of mine suggested I try my luck at creek searching. So I have been since Jan. of this year. I've found these this year. The creek runs through my property.

What part of NC you in? Nice finds!

NW Piedmont. I've also found 150-175 pottery sherds and what looks to be a fragment of a quartzite bannerstone (small fragment). I've only found small points and broken pieces, but I'm convinced the creek channel has many more larger ones that have settled into the sand bars and gravel bars which prevent them from being swept along by the water flow after a rain. Dosen't seem to be any easy way of finding them.

I think I would keep looking in the creek! Nice finds, I especially like the point in the middle.

Yes the middle point looks a little paleo....(something of a flute on one side) and possibly was resharpened during it's use. Sent a picture of it to NC expert and he said it is unusual but still believes it is Woodland. Found it in Jan. 2014 on a very cold day.

I am from the NW Piedmont also. I am from Yadkin Co. and hunted in Yadkin, Surry & Stokes. Then I've been to some counties near SC. Looks like you are near a Woodland site. I have tried some creek hunting before and I really haven't found much whole. I have found a few pieces in the creek but I've had better luck along the banks. Then, I do some surface hunting also. Thanks for sharing your finds. I can't wait to see what all you find next.

Welcome aboard! Is that pentagonal a Jacks Reef? Glad you joined us and you have an amazing creek to hunt.

Rockheadhunter....Thanks. I knew that you were close. I've been enjoying your posts. Tnmountains.....Thanks. Is a Jacks Reef the same as a Pee Dee Pentagonal?

Welcome to the site. Most of your finds look Woodland to me.

You found some nice ones! Likely a good camp site around there close. Pee Dee pentagonal and Jacks Reef pentagonal are basically the same thing. Just depends on were it was found. Around the Piedmont area of N.C. it would be called Pee Dee.

I do not know and would have to look it up. I know here they are jacks reefs. Probably the same thing. Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the board. Those are nice finds. Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff- don't give up on that creek! And, as far as the in-the-creek stuff goes, you really have to be patient- and wait till there's rain or some dynamic to change the sand/gravel bars. I have the advantage of tides. You have to check in the deep bits- just down-current of large rocks or other current-changing obstacles. They create deeper depressions on the down-water side where artifacts can collect. Out of the bank is good too. Cab't wait to see what you come up with next! Welcome!! Yakker

Yakker. Thanks. We had 1.3" of rain last night. Been using a homemade bathyscope (suggested by a poster on this forum) that has helped me find lots of pottery pieces as far as 12" down. I've tried using a 1/2" screen I made, but that is a lot of work. Anyway, sure is fun to search. I've also been given permission to surface hunt a few still remaining farms around here that turn the ground and have had good success.
