Neat salvaged piece.

Neat piece for sure bud! Are you planning on going to the show this weekend? If so I'll see ya there!

I have found, in AZ, dozens of pieces just like that pottery shard. The holes, I was told, would have a piece of rawhide pulled through it and knotted--so that it would swell when wet and seal the vessel (clay pot). The pot was more than likely a water carrying vessel. Best guess, based on my experience.

Nice find. What state did you find that in? Desert state?

Slate? Would it be used for roofing in the early 1800s?

I thought it was pottery--well then I have not found dozens of those :D :D

Pardon

What is the average size hole in those bannerstones? What's the largest diameter you've seen?

Only a half inch- do you still think they were put on atl atls? I mean I've made a couple now and bought one (atl atl) and they all had to be bigger in diameter than a half inch to maintain sturdiness and ridgedness, plus, when I put a weight on the stick it didn't seem to make any difference really. After my experiments I came to the conclusion that they must have been used for something else... I'm wondering if you've messed around at all with atl atls and bannerstones.. kind of curious to get other's opinions. Thanks for your time- :coffee2:

They have been found in the same burials as atl atl hooks, perhaps even in line with them but that archaeologist who did those excavations in Tennessee who discoverd them, and is responsible for the whole idea of bannerstones being used with atl atls, had less than good techniques. I find his work and site reports to be highly suspect... I think he rushed his work more often than not (of course half the time he had no choice) and when he was lacking certain evidence he had a tendancy to fill in the blanks himself. I actually used to be of the camp that said bannerstones were counter weights for atl atls but after reading up on the scant "evidence" for this and in combination with my own and many other's experiments I had to switch camps.. I am now of the opinion that they were not counter weights for atl atls at all. I believe the diameters of the holes is proof of it (When I seen/heard how many you had first hand experience with I was excited to get your average measurements) I think the holes on about 95% of the bannerstones found are too small to even fit on a atl atl. I think the average atl atl has got to be about 1" in diameter or more- and there's my next project, I'm going to gather as many measurements of atl atls as I can and compare with the diameter of all the bannerstones I can find. It really should give a good idea if it's even possible or not. I also heard that many bannerstones, being drilled from both sides, actually have an even smaller diameter in the middle.. time to go get the tape measure and start measuring my atl atls.. thanks for your input on these.. if you ever get a chance to measure the hole diameters of the ones you've found I would love to hear what they are for future reference-

One of these days i'll get out the banners i've found complete and broken for measurements. I also have a few that i've bought from the local area. As far as the centers of the holes being smaller thats only true to a point. True that they were drilled from both sides but the last step in the drilling would be to ream the hole out with a stick or reed to make it cylindrical. I used to have one that still had scars from the flint drilling process that weren't polished out by the reed/stick. On some if the drilling was off just a few degrees it would result in a larger hole at one end, sometimes both ends by the time they streamlined the hole. Sometime in the future i'll get you a bunch of pictures and measurements together. Until then time to find some points.
