They have been found in the same burials as atl atl hooks, perhaps even in line with them but that archaeologist who did those excavations in Tennessee who discoverd them, and is responsible for the whole idea of bannerstones being used with atl atls, had less than good techniques. I find his work and site reports to be highly suspect... I think he rushed his work more often than not (of course half the time he had no choice) and when he was lacking certain evidence he had a tendancy to fill in the blanks himself. I actually used to be of the camp that said bannerstones were counter weights for atl atls but after reading up on the scant "evidence" for this and in combination with my own and many other's experiments I had to switch camps.. I am now of the opinion that they were not counter weights for atl atls at all. I believe the diameters of the holes is proof of it (When I seen/heard how many you had first hand experience with I was excited to get your average measurements) I think the holes on about 95% of the bannerstones found are too small to even fit on a atl atl. I think the average atl atl has got to be about 1" in diameter or more- and there's my next project, I'm going to gather as many measurements of atl atls as I can and compare with the diameter of all the bannerstones I can find. It really should give a good idea if it's even possible or not. I also heard that many bannerstones, being drilled from both sides, actually have an even smaller diameter in the middle.. time to go get the tape measure and start measuring my atl atls.. thanks for your input on these.. if you ever get a chance to measure the hole diameters of the ones you've found I would love to hear what they are for future reference-
