Friend found this, about 10 inches deep. Anyone know what it is, and if the "97" relates to 1897 or 1997, or note a date at all?

I'm seeing "PADDLE BOATS" and "97". I'm thinking some kind of medal or award, maybe for paddle boat race?

Not sure of 1897 or 1997, though 20 years could be rough on some metals if the environment was rough enough.

Paddle boats have been around a long time, Wiki says Leonardo da Vinci has credit for coming up with the concept. Also, paddle boats is the name given to canoes by some.

I'm with it being an event award also. It does look like a late 19th piece to me, so 1897 seems to be the time imo. Often these metal art thing of this era have tiny makers marks. It does look as if it once had a gold wash finish.

a couple of things about it make me think it's from 1997 rather than 1897. for one, it has a steel suspension loop. I would think one from 1897 would more likely have a brass loop. for another thing it says '97, which I would believe to be more common in this modern era to use an apostrophe. Most badges and awards I've ever seen from 100+ years ago have the entire year engraved. just my 2 cents

I saw it before cleaning, the back side with the 97 took some scrubbing to get any detail whatsoever. I'm not sure that is an apostrophe, yet the 97 does look well centered so 1997 could be right.

I have to make a correction...it was dug at 12 inches.

I think with the fact that this is a modern sports medal, the '97 would refer to 1997.

Vhs07, agreed. Now 1997 seems appropriate.
