I don't know how deep to go. I've seen some places subsoiled and some that are just turned.
 

Big as you are you should be able to dig halfway to china in one breath,lol,in my experience which isnt much only one spot ive dug they usually lay in 6-8 inch range,then its hard red clay i dont even find a pebble in that layer kinda interesting how artifacts where im at only are that deep you figure a few thousand years and theyd be real deep with the forest decomposition and likes but who knows what the area was like a hundred years ago couldve been farmed,I guess it would depend on area & soil types.
 

In OK & AR, the garden is usually tilled about
six " deep. ;D
