Need a tree ID,,no leaves

I`m hoping some of the woodworkers here might be able to ID this wood. I cut it in the winter, so no leaves. I`ve never seen this before. The red is a soft sorta pithy stuff, its in these little valleys or dimples. I wont be able to sand it out,,,I`m thinking a hard bristle brush is the way to go. Any ideas on the wood??

It reminds me of either hornbeam or vine damage.

The vine damage is why I cut it down,,,to make a walking stick. I jus don`t know what type of tree it is. I have never pealed bark and found that color underneath. It was cut after x-mas and it weighed a ton! It has dried out nicely,,lost a lot of weight without checking or warping. I have googled it every way I can think of but I cant find a picture that matches it. I`m still looking into the hornbeam and ironwood,,,lacking photo proof. Thanx for the reply
