Need help Identifying tooth or claw

Our 12 year old son found this camping in utah. it has a little dried-dead tissue attached. This is a huge tooth or claw of something!! We've done lots of research online and we can't figure out what this is from!!! Please help!!

My guess is that it is an ungual - hoof core - from an elk. Compare with this example from a deer:
