i desided i wanted to sell some of my finds to buy a new detector and have some questions reguarding acid testing i bought a pendant that is marked 925 on the bail i took it to a pawn shop and had them look at it and they said it was not silver just the bail was silver so i took it home and did a acid test it passed for the 10k but disappeared with the 14k so i took it back up there and told him what i discovered and he said it was most likely plated brass so i took it back home and filed into it so see if there was a base metal and the metal seemed to look like the same as the top layer i would like to sell it but i dont want to sell it as 10k white gold if it isnt and i tont want to sell it as 925 silver if its gold what do you guys think? is it gold? or silver? or just junk? i thought at first it was fake becuase it was really hard i have to put preassure down to get it to scratch on the stone it is also slightly magnetic is some spots (some sides are magnetic and some are not) i was told some white gold can be slightly magnetic though the one thats hold is the 10k acid and the one that disappeared it the 14k am i doing the test correctly?

I don't know if you have tested correctly, but not everyone in a pawn shop has a lot of expertise. I would advise you to shop around to different places to scrap, developing a good relationship with a good jewelry maker works the best for me. The rates they pay are sometimes wildly different and the level of expertise is different from place to place, plus if they err they will always try to err on the side of caution. I've found a lot of sterling that was only marked on the bale or the clasp, oftentimes not marked at all. Many jewelry makers do it that way rather than going through the trouble of marking every surface of the piece. As far as wheather it is gold or silver, usually peices are either one or the other, but after doing this for 8 years I've seen many combination pieces. However, if it is silver and white gold, I would expect it to marked as such.

I have taken it to many jewlers with no result if it was silver would it scratch a gold color like it is? I mean if it where plated over a differ.t metal wouldn't the file mark be a diffrent metal? I used 14k acid and put it in the file mark and it turned a brownish black
