I found this in a 19th century farm field.

Whites V3i VDI is 37 on the piece with the shank and 18 on the smaller piece.

Any help in identifying this would be appreciated.

thanks

mike

I found two similar buttons at a mid 1800s site here in south Georgia. Mine are very thin and wavy. I think mine are civilian coat buttons.

That looks like a match. Mine is thin too. I'd be curious to see the shank on yours, if possible. Thanks for the info.

When I took mine out of the case to photograph them I noticed they are different from your button. Yours has a flat back but mine are a mirror image of the fronts. Mine are thin stamped brass but yours looks like another metal.

Maybe tombac, which is very brittle and comes out of the ground shiny? The shank on the op's button looks a little weird, normally shanks are always made out of brass, iron or pewter, I have never found a tombac button with a tombac shank.

Here is the side view it is really thin. The shank appears thicker than the button.

Is the second picture in your first post a GIF?

Looks like thin tombac to me, circa 1780-1820s
