Detector(s) used
Excalibur II, Whites DFX
I am looking to buy a second water detector; I currently own an Excalibur II but lately have been having problems with it when I submerse the controls. I was considering another Excalibur but I am sort of afraid that I might run into the same problem. The other detector I have been thinking about is the CZ-21. For those of you that have used both detectors, could you let me know the one you prefer? I only hunt in salt water along the Florida gulf coast.
Thanks in advance.

I had a cz-21 first time out it fried. Not to scare you away though, cause I really liking the detector up until the time it died. I went to an excal II and so happy to have made that choice, no problems so far. (crossing fingers and knocking on wood) I just picked up a garrett seahunter that I will try out this weekend. I really didn't need another detector, but my dad has been hankering to try water detector and is a garrett fan. I had it shipped to dads and it came in today, he couldn't wait to try it took it in the yard and called me to say that the sound gave him a headache that it is so so loud. (My dad is so hard of hearing that hearing aids don't work for him) So that worries me a little. He came up with a solution, he said he would wear the headphones around his neck. Also they make some land headphones I think that might have volume control for the detector. Dad won't ever be over calf deep in the water so I think that would work for him too.

I would highly recommend the Sovereign GT, except they are customized so I would consider another Excal if it was me. You can pick up used Excals at a good price now.

Go back several posts down the line in this forum and you will see more than a couple of times that this question has been asked recently. Just look for posts about people asking about detectors. Not trying to cut you off or limit responses but the question gets basically the same responses all the time and you will be able to see lengthy debates about detectors including my two cents worth in the other inquiries. One is only about a week old so it should still be on the first page or so in Beach and Shallow Water.

Here is a link to one post and I will try to get you a couple of others.

Here is a second I just found also. Again, if I found others, they would read about the same. The question comes up often and we all usually put out the same info each time.

Good Luck.

I've own an Excalibur since 1991 and there isn't a better machine out there that can past the iron nail and ring test. If you are having trouble with the controls when its submerged. Here is the way I set my machine up, set sensitivity about midway, set discrimination at 1, adjust your volumn where its comfortable and leave the on/off switch on. The only control I use is threshold and Discrimination/Pinpoint. I used to have problems with the knobs and since I started using these techniques, they stopped. To turn unit on and off, unscrew the battery connection cable. ;D
You might also have a bad seal on one of those control knobs and should be sent back to factory for a check. I fried a motherboard years ago and it was a $500 repair. :'(
I also have a backup detector, a Garrett AT3, I found on eBay for $150, nearly new. Wish Garrett still made them, a great machine.

Mike,

I have an excal II, and a few weeks back I was looking for a second underwater detector for beach hunting in Florida.

After much evaluation, I got a Garrett Sea Hunter MK II.

We took it to the beach last week, and after a week of hunting, I've learned how great the Excalibur is, and why a PI machine like the Sea Hunter II will mean a lot of digging - since it has very little useful discrimination.

I'll soon put the Sea Hunter MK II up on ebay, and after it sells, get another Excalibur as my second water (and dry sand) machine.

Nothing wrong with the Sea Hunter - it does exactly what it was designed to do, and it finds everything made of metal - no matter how small, or how deep (up to about two feet in sand).

But I prefer the discrimination in the excalibur and the tone identification.

I just bought a second for me Excalibur 1000 for $600 off of EBay. It looks brandnew, a lady had it that her husband didn't use it much, I believe he had passed away.

The new one runs quieter than my first one so I am using the newer one now. I love it.

I would say try to find a second hand machine from the sales forum here on the Tnet or on EBay. I have seen incredible deals that I missed, for example I missed another Excal last month that sold for $500 and also looked new. The claim was it had been used one time. I bought a CZ-20 last year that was hardly used for $400.

There are many deals out there, one just has to be patient and look.

Good luck on finding your second water machine.

What better back up for an Excal then an Excal...............
