need help with flying

Going on a trip and flying united. I've read conflicting point of views so I was wondering what you guys think. When flying, is it better to check your detector or to carry it on?

Check in a well padded case.

Break it down, put the electronics unit and the coil in your carryon and the rods and diggers in your checked bag. the TSA has no problem with carrying them on. That way if the checked bag gets lost or stolen, you are only missing the least expensive portion of your detector. Checking a complete detector invites a quick theft.
