My buddy that I MD with found this token a few years ago when he was visiting in Minnesota. I have looked all over the Web for info about it and have turned up nothing about this company. It says R.M. Abbott & Co. Paynesville, Minn on the front and Good for .50 in trade on the reverse side.

If anyone knows anything about this company please let me know.

Thanks

Raymond Marcus Abbott (1880-1961) was his full name - I don't know the nature of the business, but will check with the fellow who is cataloging Minnesota trade tokens and has a lot of directories that may show the business. He was a farmer in most of the references I find. Asking for him, would you be willing to let him use your photos? Thanks!

Yes, he can use the photos. Thanks for the info that you gave me so far.

I called the Paynesville, Minn Historical Society today and the didn't even know who or what the company was.

I'm going to predict that we will find that he ran a general merchandise store and that the "& Company" was a silent partner like his father, brother, etc. Things in these operations were pretty low-key. Most of these little stores used a denomination set of tokens - 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, and $1. I'll bet there are more waiting to be found!

That was my guess, I assume that it was a general store or a drug store token.

R.M. Abbott is listed in the 1912 Bradstreet as a grocery in Paynesville. No mention of the '& Co.'
