Hi all,

I recently acquired this United States Navy sword. However, I am unsure about some of the markings on it. There is a name engraved on the sword, which I believe is Edgar William Burns however, I have been unable to find any information about him (sorry, the sword is very rusty). There is also a number 74 on the sword sheath, which could mean anything. Any information regarding the officers name or how old it could be is appreciated. I understand its probably not worth very much but I would like to get to the bottom of the mystery. Thanks so much.

I believe it is the 1852 Pattern . . . which is still in use so that doesn't help date it. N.S. Meyer is an "official" supplier, so that's a good sign. If you see "Made in the USA" on it that would help date it. The site linked below has some pointers that can narrow down when it was produced.

Vintage M 1852 Naval Officers Sword Presentation Quality!

Hi,

This should be the Made USA marking.

There you go. That puts it sometime after 9 September 1939 when N.S. Meyers stopped buying the blades from Eickhorn ("Soligen" or "Germany" marked).

So it could be a WWII Officer's sword . . . or later.
