Four of us went for a bottle dive today and one of my buddies came up with this belt and buckle. Just wondering if anyone can help ID the buckle and maybe have a date for it?
We also got some other goodies as well.

I'm not expert by all means but it looks like a two piece CW snake buckle.

CSBP 15. Dug Confederate “Snake” Buckle.
Dug in a Confederate position on the Spotsylvania, VA. Battlefield, this fine looking Belt buckle is of the type produced by “ISSACS AND CAMPBELL” in London, England and brought through the blockade. The belt adjuster was found nearby.

Thanks everyone for your input on the belt buckle. From all the info I could gather it is an 1860s version. It was found in Halifax Harbour and could very well be Confederate becuase we had Blockade runners come through here during the CW. Most likely it is British though as this was a British port and protected by the British until the early 1900s. It was nice to see that most of the belt came up with it.

Have seen one posted before.

It is cool to have the intact belt with it, lack of oxygen I guess ?

Nice find.

Wow...great find Dave! Will you be able to preserve the leather?

Hi Rick, yea the lack of oxygen can keep it in much better shape, if you dig it out of the mud or sand underwater it is even better.
Looks like a wet few days coming up.

A good soaking with fresh water and lots of Neats Foot Oil rubbed into it will preserve it.

I was wondering if the water would help keep preserve the leather and I got my answer. Such a great piece, please post pics when you rub the oil on it.

That's an awesome and very rare find to come up with not only the buckle but the belt as well. Nice going Dave!
