Need help with this "hatchet"!!

This was found in South Jersey in an area that revealed coins dating from the 1830s to today. The front is more rounded, and the back is flatter. It measures 17 inches long and is all metal (iron?). Any ideas what it could actually be and/or its age?

Looks like a blob of melted metal to me

Yes, melted for sure since it is flat on the bottom and rounded at the top. Is it iron or lead? I can't tell from the pic. Breezie

A good close-up picture of the back would help. If it was a "flow" from something in a foundry, the back would take the impression of what it hardened on. It can tell a lot.
