Any idea what this might be? Solid brass with no markings. Found in an Ohio barn built in 1740. Thanks!

Both good ideas Tamrock. These folks imply its medical related, but don't expand on the exact function: Double Ended Spoon, Collection of Medical Antiques
With that in mind I did see other double ended medicine spoons. The one in the link has a makers name, which may answer that for sure.

They would scrape and such... remove par of brain with this...
I think you can see it demonstrated in a movie (one of my favs) "Master And Commander".
I THINK.
Could be some sort of apothecary spoon.

I like the animal part scraping / extraction tool, especially since it was found in an old barn, people probably wasted a lot less of the animal back in the "good o'le days".

THis could also have been Veterinarian Equally disgusting Nothing like an ol puss scraper decorating your mantle!

I think before that hit my mantel a good 3 hour boil in bleach water would be in order, that greasy, black looking residue would have to go.
