Found this brass relic which has Hampden Sydney written on it a college in Virginia founded in 1775. Is this some type of buckle? Any idea on how old?

This sort of deco school/college belt buckle was popular in the 1920's-30's...up to the 50's they were still around, but I think yours is an earlier one. Some can found with a patent date of May 29, 1923.
