Hey T-Net,

I keep burning through the Koss headphones that come with the Explorer. I am getting tired of repairing them. I hunt some overgrown, rugged terrain and my headphones are constantly getting knocked off my head by brush or tree limbs that happen to run into my head. I am looking for some headphones that are simply and rugged: no buttons, switches, or exposed wire (except for the lead wire, of course).

If anyone has any advice, I would sure love to hear it..pun intended.

Thanks in advance!!

Gray Ghost Deep Woods Headphones or RatPhones Max would fit the bill. I personally own the RatPhones Max and love the sound quality over the standard Koss UR30's that came with my detectors.

Read about them here:
http://www.windycitydetectors.com/headphones.htm

and here:
http://www.detectusa.com/ratphones.htm (the things that look like toggle switches are actually little volume controls... they never move once you set them from what I've experienced) Windy also sells the RatPhones Max if you need a great dealer ;-)

I'm almost thinking that a better solution for you would be some cordless bluetooth headphones though... because it sound like more of your problem is the lead wire getting snagged and pulling the headphones off your head. I've always heard BT was delayed audio though so I stayed away from it, but maybe it's gotten better? Whenever BT comes up though, I never hear of anyone pointing to a really good solution that's easy to buy.

Good luck.

I still have my stock koss headphoned. I have had no trouble with the E-Series 9000 Whites/Koss Headphones. All I do is take up the slack on the cable.

Brett and Ant....Thank you very much for your advice and suggestions. I am going to look into all the options you laid out before me. I really appreciate it!!

I have the rat phones. The are nice, comfortable. I like the fact that you can get a replacement wire coil that can be replaced easily in the field. I found the stock Koss headphones that came with my EXP II too loose on my head.

sunray pro golds, i just got them and the UR 30s are in the back of the closet the pro golds have a very clear sound.

Thanks for the info, edgemano and Born2Dtect! I have not made a decision yet so your comments really are helpful.

Another option:

A user here suggested these headphones to me for a wireless option. He uses a minelab machine and says there's no interference.

Radio Shack 2.4 GHz Wireless Stereo Headphones

$60

I'd like to try them out myself, but only for the summer weather. I really like my Ratphones for every other season.

He said the headphones last about 8 hours on a charge.
If anyone checks these out, please let us know how you like them.

I have a friend who bought them and didn't like them. The sound quality wasn't that good. I use the Grey Ghost headphones myself.

I tried a set of wireless headphones, from the brand maker of a set offered by a detector site. The were nice fitting and the sound was clear but? They sound delayed noticeably, the batteries only lasted about 4 hours, I had to make an adapter for the audio 1/4" to 1/8 stereo and mount. I don,t use it any more. If it was not delayed and I got a higher mA(milliamp) hour batteries it may be worth it. It was modeled after one that were for IPods, MP3 players. The sound delay here was not noticed at all.

Detectorpro headphones (http://www.detectorpro.com).

I have heard the Gray Ghosts are really good. But I use the Black Widows (have 2 pairs), and they are wonderful at blocking out noise and are real comfortable.

Sneaky,One thing you may want to consider a set that will enable to switch the set off with a flip of a switch. If you don't use a X1 probe this will help when you use your pinpointer.I use a Pistol Probe and the Explorer chatters even out side the cross talk range.I have an older pair of Timberwolves with the mono stero switch that acts as a off switch in one direction.A simple flip of these switch will help you hear the pin pointer better and at least you won't hear the chatter from the Explorer. The pin pointer used will still have to be a safe distance or the chatter could still interfear with the probe.Happy Hunting

Keep it simple!~ look for comfort. You do not have to pay a lot for your phones. It is good to have a volume control.

Cheep headphones don’t give a smooth clear sound. You pay for what you get when it comes to headphones. In other words, you have to pay to play. That's MHO, and I have had 2 lower end sets, and I have 2 upper end sets.

I bought my Gray Ghost headphones 6 yrs. ago & still have them. They are great & if this set gives out, I will buy them again. Ron
