You don't need a Minelab to recover all the goodies at the beach. Just like you don't need a Caddy to drive anywhere. There are cheaper detectors out there too, but waterproof ones are all more expensive.

If you aren't going in the water nor get it wet, a good land detector with a saltwater mode will do. If you stay out of the wet sand, you can use the hot Garrett ACE 250 or one of the Tesoro hot models. The ACE 250 can be had for under $200.00.

Sure you can go cheap for just a few trips down a year, but what if the Treasure Hunting bug bites you as it did the rest of us and you wanna use it at the local park and woods. You'll then have wasted the money on the lower bargin jobbie you bought online.

Just trying to save you some grief.

Good Luck,
Sandman

I should have mentioned. I have an ACE 250 that I use for relic hunting and a little coin hunting. I have heard it is not great on wet sand so thought I would look around for something that could be used in the wet sand.

You can pickup a Bounty Hunter model with all the bells and whistles and misc gear for about $400.00 or less depending on the model. That would give you at lest 6" depth and probably more plus you can ground balance it manually. You'll need that feature if you hunt near saltwater. BH is a great little starter detector, possibly got more people started than any other brand. I have two! Monty

If it was me and my parents lived by the beach I would buy myself a good water proof detector as you are going to want to get in the water. I have tried to stay out of the water when it's cold, but I couldn't resist the lure even then. If I had to remember every time I went in the water to not raise my rod above my electronics, no doubt I would be on my 2nd unit by now.

I have a Beach Hunter ID and I'm getting ready to get a Tesoro Tiger Shark. I just can't get pass that lifetime warranty, as well as Sandman gives it high praise.
