I bought a ring in a box lot at auction and I picked up the stuff today. The engraving inside has me confused. The STERLING, I understand, even thought the ring does not look silver. The rest I don't understand. Does it mean that it is gold plated silver? Thanks.

Looks like sterling to me... this is the patina that sterling takes on.

As far as the rest... this would be "gold filled"... 1/7th... which is good... as far as gold filled is concerned anyway.... higher gold content.

Okay, thanks. I didn't know anything about the ring when I bid on the lot. Turns out it is a Fraternal Order of Elks ring. Just happens to fit me, too, although it looks like it may have been resized at some point.

So, I am guessing that the eagle would possibly be gold filled. Don't really care too much whether it is or not. I am happy with what I paid for the lot of items that I got. It was an odd mix, including lots of American Legion pins, Japanese peso notes, foreign coins and the innards and face of a WWII US Army Ordnance Dept. stop watch.
