Need some help here

I'm thinking it's the tip to a flag pole that would be carried by a color guard. I found it at an old church that dates back to the revolution. The film canister is there for scale. It's made of solid brass.

The opening is on one side and it is a heavy gauge brass. What was a buggy shaft used for?
