Well its not going to be long until I purchase a new machine. I'm going to spend somewhere in the area of 400-500 bucks on it and would love to ask all of my fellow members what they would buy if someone gave you that money and said here go buy a new machine! Let me backup and say I have used a XLT and for about a month had a DFX and they were great machines but I would like to get away from the Whites brand. Not that there is a thing wrong with them I just want to try something different. A unit that is not a Whites. Let me backup some more and say I had to sell them both due to having surgery and had to make ends meat someway! I do want it to have a good ID system. That is all I have used over the last 16 years and must admit I do like the ID especially when it come to pinpointing and showing depth.

I have looked at the Fisher F5 and Tesoro DeLeon and they have both made my ears perk up!

Please give me your honest unbiased opinion.

Thanks

What kind of hunting are you doing, coins, relics, etc.? What are the ground conditions? A little more info would help. Also you may be able to get a good used high end machine for your money instead of a new mid-priced detector.

Civil War relic hunting and a lot of open field hunting trying to find old house sites. Here in KY it is red clay with not much mineralization.

I would recommend a Tesoro detector, they are light weight and have a lifetime warranty. :icon_sunny:

i love my t-2, hot and simular to the f-75, light and much cheaper than the f-75, the f-70 sounds like a winner, i also liked the xt-70, but feel alot more comfortable with the t-2, with the trigger, and audio in the PP mode. the all metal bothered me on the xt's, many good machines out there, grab the one that peeks your intrest the most

Yes Tesoro builds an awesome detector with a warranty that no other brand would dare put there name on but there is ONLY ONE thing I don't like about there TID and if I'm not mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong please is that all coins besides nickles read 95? I guess that is much as a question as it is a statement. Is that true? I like the separation of coins from the high 60's to high 90's like the Whites and Fishers. That is not a must but I do like it.

Thanks for the reply but I think the T2 is a little out of my price range. I'm trying to keep it under $500 bucks. Not asking for much am I? :D

KFB,
i cannot believe that this topic came up....i, myself, am in the same boat as you. I am in the midst of an upgrade and am more confused as ever....i just came back from a local dealer that offers ALL the major brands and am now trying to sort it all out. I have read many of the posts of you and your cronies. This is what i have decided for myself:
I use to own a Whites and SORELY miss the VID numbers. Fisher,Whites,Tesoro and Minelab are the brands(there may be others) that currently offer VID readings. The Tesoros (Deleon and Cortes) show all coins, other than a nickel, as 95. Fishers models, F2, ID Excel and ID whatever the name is, show coins according to their individual VID. Minelab XTERRA ID's coins according to their individual VID but they do not display what the denomination potentially is(you must remember the VIDand associate it to the denomination.) Minelab: here is my big quandry. Do i believe all the hype or not. The Xterra 50 is one model i am considering. The multi frequency units are too expensive and too slow for my swing.
So here it is:
1. i have eliminated the Tesoro's because the Deleon is not ground balanceable and the Cortes is overpriced in my opinion( it only ground balances in all metal mode)
2. I am not pleased with the recent acquisition of Fisher and therefor have nixed them( besides, i recently handled an F2 and what a POS)
3. A Minelab Xterra 50 is a consideration
4. My choice of preference right now is a White's M6. It has auto grond balance, a sweet VDI/denomination screen, and ample coil choices. The MXT seems to offer only software enhancements. For my style of huntinf the M6 seems perfect. if i want to relic detect i will simply go to all metal and use the plethora of tones the unit offers...ALSO< the one thing that is priceless is the trigger switch for PP and the all metal multi tone selection. Pressing the PP on units with a thumb PP button really aggrevates my carpal tunnel.

How many coins are you gonna run across at a housesite or CW site?  ::)

I'd take better ID and separation on the LOW end of the scale over the high end ANYDAY.  Period.  If it is a coin, ya dig.  I wanna know if it's iron, pewter, lead, tin, or brass.

I could see how you might want a manual GB machine.

I've been hunting with auto GB machines for 16 years and haven't done too shabby.  :)

Can't wait to hear what you decide.

I've used White's detectors for 20 years now. They can't be beat in KY! My only problem is that I'm not satisfied with the factory presets. It is best to work out your own programs. That can be time consuming, but I've found that with a little practice, I can soon have the detector running smoothly and at it's best at each site. I'm in E. KY and we do have iron mineralization that can make the machines pretty erratic at times!

My son has a Fisher CZ20 and uses it on land more than he does in water! That is a really sensitive machine and it's a pure shame that Fisher doesn't make those anymore! I like the Fisher almost as much as I like my White's. The only difference being the LED display and the programming.

I have handled Tesoros and love those machines as well. The problems are exactly what are mentioned in the other posts above.

Minelabs and Garretts each have their own bells and whistles, and I haven't tried the newer models, so not sure about them.

I suggest a programmable White's detector! I realize this may not be what you want to hear, but it is what works for us in KY!

I would have to get a used explorer off Ebay, times are tight right now and I have seen a lot of them going cheap,Im pretty sure you could get an Ex2 used for that kind of money. I would start watching them and keep an eye out for one that ends at like 3 in the morning, just make sure you are buying from a reputable seller and you shouldnt have any problems.
